The biggest Korean drama launch of 2026 did not need a broadcast network, a 16-episode order or a romance. Teach You a Lesson dropped on Netflix on June 5, 2026, debuted at No. 1 on the platform's non-English show chart and held that spot for four straight weeks. In its second week it was No. 1 in 46 countries and in the Top 10 of 91 markets, according to Netflix. After four weeks it had passed 498 million hours viewed and ranked fifth by views among Korean Netflix originals, ahead of The Glory, per Munhwa Ilbo's tally. It did all of that in ten episodes.
What Teach You a Lesson is about
Kim Mu-yeol plays Na Hwa-jin, an inspector at the fictional Educational Rights Protection Bureau, which in Korea.net's summary exists to restore teacher authority at schools disrupted by unruly students and toxic parents. Jin Ki-joo and Block B's Pyo Ji-hoon (P.O) play fellow inspectors, and Lee Sung-min is Education Minister Choi Gang-seok, the bureau's backer, per Yonhap in The Korea Times. The hook is also the provocation: the government authorizes the inspectors to use physical intervention and unconventional methods on delinquent students, as its Wikipedia entry puts it. The source is the Naver webtoon Get Schooled by Chae Yong-taek and Han Ga-ram; Hong Jong-chan directed, from scripts by Lee Nam-kyu, Kim Da-hee and Moon Jong-ho. School violence is a live, painful subject in Korea, and the bureau framing lets the show process real anger through procedure.
Ten episodes is the whole strategy
Set the episode count next to the year's broadcast hits and the contrast is the story. Every drama in this table finished its run in the first half of 2026.
| Drama | Platform | Episodes | Best result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teach You a Lesson | Netflix | 10 | No. 1 non-English show, 4 weeks |
| Perfect Crown | MBC | 12 | 13.8% finale |
| The Judge Returns | MBC | 14 | 13.6%, episode 13 |
| My Royal Nemesis | SBS | 14 | 11.8% finale |
| Phantom Lawyer | SBS | 16 | 10.0%, episode 6 |
Episode counts and Nielsen Korea nationwide peaks are from each drama's Wikipedia entry. Teach You a Lesson is two episodes shorter than Perfect Crown and six shorter than Phantom Lawyer: a complete arc a viewer can finish in days, not across seven weeks of Friday and Saturday nights. A ten-episode run that holds No. 1 for a month is an argument the industry will have to answer when it plans 2027 slates.
Four weeks at No. 1, week by week
Netflix counts a view as hours watched divided by runtime, and Munhwa Ilbo added up the weekly figures after the fourth week. Chart weeks end on Sunday, so the first one holds only the three days after the Friday release.
| Week ending | Views | What the chart said |
|---|---|---|
| June 7 | 6.4 million | No. 1 non-English show; Top 10 in 48 countries and regions |
| June 14 | 21.1 million | No. 1 in 46 countries, Top 10 in 91 markets; 225.8 million hours |
| June 21 | 11.8 million | Third week at No. 1 |
| June 28 | 7.3 million | Fourth week at No. 1; 46.6 million views and 498.9 million hours in total |
The shape of the run. The second week, the first full one, was more than three times the opening weekend. After that, each week kept roughly 60% of the one before (11.8 million is 56% of 21.1 million; 7.3 million is 62% of 11.8 million), and the show still held the top spot. On Netflix's engagement report for the first half of 2026 it placed sixth among all titles on the service, with 48.2 million views, according to Herald Business. Munhwa Ilbo's list shows only four Korean originals with more views: the three seasons of Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead.
Where it sits in the 2026 field
Nielsen never saw this show — it is invisible to broadcast ratings, which is exactly why our mid-year ranking tracks the two scoreboards separately. On the streaming board no Korean title this year has outdrawn it, including My Royal Nemesis, which reached the Top 10 in 44 countries. Watch it if you want the year's most efficient thriller; skip it if school-violence subject matter is too heavy a lift, and route yourself to something gentler through the vibe quiz instead. Platform logistics are simple for once — it is a Netflix original, globally, and the streaming guide covers the rest of the year's more complicated map.
Mina's Take
The 91-market spread is the headline, but the ten-episode order is the actual news. Every broadcast hit in the table above needed 12 to 16 episodes; the year's biggest Korean streaming debut needed ten, and sixth place on Netflix's half-year report says nobody felt short-changed. The detail most coverage misses is the decay curve: a show that kept only about 60% of its views from week to week, down from a 21-million peak, still stayed No. 1 for a month. That is what a finishable story buys. On a second season, the record is mixed. Sports Donga reported in July that one was under discussion, and Netflix answered on July 21 that nothing has been decided, per Soompi, which adds that the finale ends by hinting at a new case and that director Hong Jong-chan has said he wants to continue. My call: Netflix confirms a second season before December 31, 2026. If the answer on New Year's Eve is still "nothing decided," I read the signals wrong.
What to watch next
- The rest of the year's winners, both scoreboards, in the best of 2026 ranking.
- Done in a weekend and need the next thriller? Filter the drama index by crime and thriller. Same school setting, plus zombies: All of Us Are Dead sits at the top level of our Korean horror dramas ranking.
- Watching with someone new to K-dramas? Start them on the legal streaming guide so they stop asking you where things are.
- Want a school drama that is still airing? Four Hands, Two Sonatas puts three young musicians in an arts high school, and it has topped Good Data Corporation's weekly buzz list three weeks running.
